The conference "FEMeeting: Women in Art, Science and Technology" was driven by the desire to develop and promote a more direct collaboration at the level of artistic and research projects between individuals who identify with the female gender. The FEMeeting project started in 2017, being the result of the collaboration between the artist Marta de Menezes and the social scientist Dalila Honorato after the observation that, in the field of science and contemporary art, women have a visible presence in both festivals and international conferences.
The aim of the FEMeeting conference is to disseminate projects being carried out by women around the world and, as a result, to contribute: (a) to the development of research methodologies in art and science and (b) to the growth of cooperation strategies that can increase knowledge sharing and bring communities closer together. The conference has an original structure integrating a part of presentations open to the public in urban centres, such as Lisbon (2018 and 2019), Porto (2019) and Évora (2018) and the main part of presentations held behind closed doors in smaller localities, such as São Luís - Odemira (2018) and Vila Nova de Milfontes (2019). These features, in addition to various organised or spontaneous social activities, have the functionality to encourage communication between participants. One such event took place at FEMeeting 2018, in Évora, on the occasion of Leonardo/ISAST's 50th anniversary celebration, here symbolically dedicated to all the women who contributed to the development of this institution through a toast offered by Nina Czegledy (Leonardo/ISAST) and Annick Bureaud (Leonardo/OLATS).
To date two conferences have been held, both organised by the institution Cultivamos Cultura , directed by Marta de Menezes, and supported by 5 public entities in Portugal, having gathered annually an average of 70 women coming from 30 different countries with research projects in arts, science and technology.
The results of the work developed in the FEMeeting 2018 and 2019 conferences have not yet been published but among the objectives of the project we distinguish: (a) the personal support through instantaneous communication over the internet to women developing research work (in the most lacto sense of the term) in art, science and technology (b) and the encouragement of the creation of support nuclei for research and artistic creation developed by women at the local level that can maintain among themselves a broad network of direct communication.
Due to the limitations brought about by COVID-19 FEMeeting's activities expanded in the digital space in 2020 and 2021, among them the meetings called "Teapot Chat" and participation in the Ars Electronica 2020 Festival and in the conference of the Society for Literature, Science and Art 2021 where the Sister Labs initiative was presented. In 2022 the organising committee of the FEMeeting conference intends to resume its activities in physical space once again in the Alentejo in Portugal with an international call for paper proposals to be presented in Évora, at the Convent of São Bento de Castris, from 12 to 17 September.
