Introduction
The book entitled “Sustainable University of the Future: Re-Imagining Research and Higher Education” represents a set of important-needed topics to address nowadays. Such an inspiring title discusses the requirements imposed by the rapid changes on higher education institutions that have pushed them to reconsider their traditional policies and plans and adopt more sustainable and modern programs and tools, which keep pace with transformations and anticipate the next challenges. In addition, it expands opportunities and options for faculty members and students, transcending boundaries and distances. The "Sustainable University of the Future", must play its role in sustainable development, despite the current regional and international challenges. The universities in the new era need to be transformed to lead and adopt the new changes in the world. Furthermore, the adventure of Industry 4.0 is already assuming its rhythm in today’s business environment and agendas. Companies are dramatically changing their working processes, which poses major challenges as they require proactive adaptation to the digital culture, particularly regarding its workforce’ skills and competences. Hence, it is critical that industries and universities join efforts and take an active role in preparing the next workforce and, simultaneously, support the current once through lifelong learning and continuous training. By bringing together actors (businesses, universities, public authorities and students) to address the existing gap in Higher Education and co-create innovative and multidisciplinary solutions adjusted to the current and upcoming challenges of a digital era. This is an excellent resource for anyone involved in research and higher education systems. It will be essential for governmental members, industry sector, academics, researchers, education specialists and students, who want to understand the evolution of research and higher education systems around the world, and how it will change the society.
Book Scope
In light of the rapid changes on higher education institutions that have pushed them to reconsider their traditional policies and plans, and adopt modern programs and tools, this book highlights such transformation and its challenges, towards the University of the Future.
The chapters of the book address some focus areas in the University of the Future domain, such as:
- Analyzing the current evolution of research and higher education
- Showcasing international best practices that support the university transformation
- Discussing the sustainability of the university of the future and particularly the sustainable development goals (SDGs)
- Addressing the impact of the Industry 4.0 and the role of the enhanced cooperative education
- Highlighting fundamental innovations in the infrastructure and technology, from AI-basedplatforms for distance learning to virtual teaching
- Addressing the impact of the regional and international contexts and challenges
- Highlighting the role of universities in transforming society
This book expands opportunities and options for academics, researchers, entrepreneurs and professionals, transcending boundaries and distances for efficient collaboration.

Academics, researchers, entrepreneurs and professionals are invited to contribute with book chapter(s).
Authors interested in contributing with a chapter to the book should consider submitting an extended structured abstract. A template for structured abstracts will be provided in the Appendix at the end of this Call for Chapters. We encourage authors to review the themes established for the book (see below) and indicate to which themes they intend to contribute.
