The 7th International Conference on Ethnomathematics (ICEm-7) will be held virtually on 7-10 December 2022. For the first time, ICEm-7 shall be hosted jointly by academic institutions in the Philippines, Indonesia, Nepal and Papua New Guinea. These countries belong to a culturally diverse region where there is a burgeoning scholarship on ethnomathematics. Previous ICEms were held in the following continents: ICEm-1 (1998) was in Granada, Spain; ICEm-2 (2002) was held in Ouro Preto, Brazil; ICEm-3 (2006) was in Auckland, New Zealand; ICEm-4 (2010) was hosted in Towson, USA; ICEm-5 (2014) was in Maputo, Mozambique; and ICEm-6 (2018) was in Medellin, Colombia.
The International Conference on Ethnomathematics takes place every four years under the auspices of the International Study Group on Ethnomathematics (ISGEM). It brings together ethnomathematicians and scholars investigating the interplay of mathematics and culture in different parts of the world, as well as individuals and organizations interested in knowing, sharing, interrogating, and/or debating the practice of ethnomathematics.
ICEm-7 Theme
This year’s theme is: Ethnomathematics: Embracing Diverse Knowledge Systems for Social Justice and Peace. The theme highlights the cultural diversity of peoples and knowledge systems in the Asia-Pacific region and recognizes issues of social justice and peace as being urgent and continuing concerns not only in the Asia-Pacific but in many parts of the world. These are the same issues and concerns that Professor Ubiratan D’Ambrosio problematized in his conception of ethnomathematics. Thus, the theme of ICEm-7 puts to center stage D’Ambrosio’s desire for ethnomathematics to contribute to the pursuit of a just and humane society in culturally diverse social contexts.
Thematic Areas
Following the previous six conferences and informed by the theme, the ICEm-7 shall highlight current, vital, and ground-breaking work in the field of ethnomathematics, focusing on but are not limited to the following thematic areas:
- Ethnomathematics in school contexts
- Ethnomathematics and teacher education
- Ethnomathematics and its theory of knowledge
- Ethnomathematics and its political nature
- Ethnomathematics beyond the school context
