Abstract

This research delves into the potential benefits of merging Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) to streamline and enhance the process of issuing building permits and conducting automated compliance checks. The paper conducts a detailed analysis of the core aspects of both BIM and GIS then by comparing and contrasting these technologies, the study illuminates the potential difficulties and benefits of integrating these systems. It assesses ongoing research that employs BIM-GIS integration for digital permitting and code compliance checking, highlighting existing technological and methodological shortcomings. The study stresses the necessity of continuing endeavors for improved semantic integration and the creation or improvement of interoperable standards to maximize the advantages of GIS and BIM for regulatory applications. The conclusions of this research serve to inform further studies and practical implementations, advocating for a progression towards more effective, transparent, and compliant development practices.
