Abstract

Teaching engineering design through senior project or capstone engineering courses has increased in recent years as the engineering profession and the bodies responsible for accrediting engineering programs have called for change. Furthermore, the World Economic Forum has listed complex problem-solving skills as one of the top ten skills sought by industry among graduates since 2015. In Malaysia, the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) emphasizes that engineering students produce design solutions and must prepare for training through a curriculum that culminates in a major design experience. This paper reviews current state, standard practices, issues and solutions of capstone design education across the country as revealed through a literature search of a large number of papers related to engineering design courses. It also reveals several examples of learning approaches and learning theories that have been used to improve student understanding in capstone design courses. This paper is expected to help all the stakeholders to provide insights on how to improve curriculum and practice in the implementation of project-based learning among capstone design students.

Keyphrases: capstone design, complex engineering problem, design project, project-based learning, students’ understanding
